Mercury
Selecting a 25hp Mercury outboard motor is a choice between two strokes or four. The EFI four-stroke is the first battery-free manual-start EFI four-stroke in the boating industry, providing fast, easy starting and smooth running. Fitting, considering that Mercury pioneered electronic fuel injection technology for marine propulsion, several decades ago. In practical terms, electronic fuel injection means turnkey starts and smooth, efficient operation. Mercury refers to its Portable range, in which the 25hp two-stroke is included, as “highly-efficient pocket dynamos”. Designed to provide quick, easy starts as well as variable trim and shallow water drive positions, they offer dependable and reliable two-stroke power. The motor’s multi-function tiller handle controls shift, stop, throttle, throttle friction and steering all with one hand operation. One-stage over-rev protection guards the engine from potential damage and provides peace of mind for the user, as does the loop-charged induction system that maximises the air/fuel mixture for impressive response, performance and fuel economy.

Suzuki
If we were to quote Suzuki’s own phrase ‘world’s best four-stroke’, it would be remiss not to add that Suzuki follow the phrase with ™ — for it is a registered trademark. However, it’s worth noting that in support of Suzuki’s own contention, the new DF25 does boast a couple of technological breakthroughs. In addition to being the first Suzuki four-stroke with a V-Twin cylinder design, the DF25 incorporates a newly designed digital capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system. This means sensors monitor engine temperature and rpm so that the onboard central processing unit (CPU) may instantly set an optimal ignition timing. The hotter spark that results, makes recoil starting easier and more reliable.

Tohatsu
“Our first priority when developing these engines was to make them lightweight without compromising reliability or performance,” says Tohatsu. Tohatsu achieves this end, at 25hp, with both a two-stroke engine (the M25) and a four-stroke (MFS25). Both boast a terrific power-to-weight ratio and top-of-the-line performance. In addition, the MFS25 is the boating industry’s first battery-free, manual start EFI four-stroke. Advanced cross-flow induction means smooth running for the MFS25, which also has a digital capacitor discharge ignition for quicker starts and a tuned intake system for crisp takeoffs and ultra-low emissions. The M25 offers simple design coupled with easy operation and handling plus great fuel economy to boot. Other features include through-the-prop exhaust for a quiet ride, thermostatically controlled cooling for constant engine temperature and parts featuring aluminium alloy, stainless steel and zinc for durability and corrosion resistance.

Honda
Not only does Honda’s four-stroke BF25 offer the greatest displacement of the pack (552cc), providing more torque in midrange operation, but it does so with greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This is down to no oil mixing. However, with automatically adjusted air/fuel mixture, the motor starts as quickly and as easily as if had fuel injection. A compact three-cylinder, three-carburettor design (utilising one carburettor per cylinder) offers smooth, quiet operation with instant throttle response and performance. To top it off, the BF25 boasts enhanced corrosion protection, from Honda’s patented ‘Double Sealed’ multi-layered pain process, to sacrificial anodes, stainless steel technology and waterproof connectors.

Yamaha
As ever, Yamaha provides the widest variation between outboard motors at a given power. There are Portable four-stroke 25hp motors, High Thrust Portable four-strokes, Portable two-strokes and a CV two-stroke. Compactness, lightness and convenience are all attributes of the Portable four-strokes. Different models offer power trim and tilt, manual tilt with electric start, manual tilt with manual start, tiller handle and in the case of the High Thrust Portable variations in shaft length. The compact Portable two-strokes offer variations in shaft length and a choice of tiller handle also, but in addition an ‘energy adviser’ function graphically displays the most fuel-efficient running speeds to enable optimum economy. But if it is an issue of economy, the CV model is the one ‘CV’ standing for ‘Customers’ Value’.

Mariner
Mariner offers a 25hp outboard motor at either end of the scale: the Portable two-stroke or the ‘BigFoot’ four-stroke. The Portable provides further choice: manual or electric start, tiller or remote control, short or long shaft. Whatever best suits your boat, really. Five trim positions, a shallow water drive setting and full tilt enables you to match the motor to your load and the water conditions. The Mariner BigFoot comes with a powerful 2.42:1 gear ratio, powering larger diameter propellers for better hole-shot and overall performance. Mariner’s four-stroke technology ensures that despite producing so much power, the BigFoot still consumes 40 per cent less fuel across the board. In other words: excellent value and savings.
